Advanced Practice - Calcific Tendonitis Can Mimic Septic Arthritis!

Calcific tendonitis

  • Calcium crystal deposits along tendons (usually supraspinatus in shoulder)
  • Deposits are jagged and irregular
  • Causes severe pain with ROM of affected joint (which can mimic septic arthritis)
  • Does not cause edema, erythema, warmth, or systemic symptoms of infection

Treatment

  • Conservative (sling, NSAIDs)
  • Referral for steroid injections/physical therapy/surgery
