Advanced Practice: The Dusky Digit
Tue, 08/15/2017 - 2:56pm
A 33 year old male presents after cutting his left index finger with a kitchen knife. You are able to control the bleeding, but the digit appears cool and dusky. Is there significant arterial involvement? Could this benefit from a replant?
TIP
Place a pulse oximeter on the affected digit and obtain a reading
Place a pulse oximeter on the same digit of the unaffected hand and obtain a reading.
If the pulse oximeter on the affected digit reads less than 85% (and the unaffected hand is normal), there is likely significant arterial injury, and this person may need replantation to fix the defect.
