#EMconf: Can't Miss Ocular Pathology

  • Periorbital edema, proptosis, ptosis, mydriasis and eye muscle weakness (often lateral gaze palsy): Think:Cavernous Sinus Thrombosis

 

  • Painless Unilateral Vision Loss: Think: Retinal detachment, CRAO, CRVO, Vitreous Hemorrhage, Amaurosis Fugax

 

  • Painful Unilateral Vision Loss: Think: Glaucoma, Temporal Arteritis, Optic Neuritis, Corneal Ulcers/Abrasion, Foreign Body

 

  • Indications for Lateral Orbital Canthotomy: retrobulbar hematoma with vision loss, elevated IOP (>40) and proptosis

 

  • Most frequent deep space infection in head/neck: Peritonsilar Abscess
