A 53 y.o. female complains of pain in her right wrist after a fall. She has mild swelling of her dorsal wrist with tenderness. What's the diagnosis? (scroll down for answer)
Answer: Scapholunate dislocation
Scapholunate dislocation
- Most common ligamentous injury of the wrist.
- Results from hyperextension of scapholuntae ligament.
- Radiograph reveals a >3mm separation between these two carpal bones - known as the "Terry Thomas sign"
- Immobilization and referral to orthopedics are appropriate, surgery sometimes required.
