A 62 y.o. male sustains an out of hospital cardiac arrest with prolonged CPR and eventual ROSC. A CT scan of the brain is obtained. What's the diagnosis? (scroll down for answer)
Answer: Cerebral Edema
- Loss of distinction between the gray and white matter.
- It may predict poor outcome after anoxic brain injury, but there is insufficient evidence to recommend CT scan alone for neuroprognostication after cardiac arrest. Click here for more information
- Emergent CT scan after ROSC is helpful to rule out trauma and non-cardiac causes of arrest.
