27 year-old female with right lower quadrant pain (RLQ). Pelvic is negative and RLQ ultrasound is below (notice the circular structure in the center of the image); what's the diagnosis? (scroll down for the answer)

 

 

 

 

Answer: Appendicitis

  • Ultrasound is a fast and non-invasive way to diagnose appendicitis in adults
  • Use a linear probe with the patient supine and look for the followng:
    • Tubular structure is >6mm and is tender with pressure
    • No peristasis of the structire
    • Non-compressible
