Definition:
- intestinal mucosal wall edema and disruption of wall integrity in a neutropenic patient
Pathogenesis:
- Weakened immune system --> intestinal overgrowth --> invasion of opportunistic bacteria.
- May lead to sepsis and bowel perforation.
- Mortality 22%-50%.
